Force Before and during World War II the US Air Force was a military air force, part of the land army. First it was called the US Army Air Corps (USAAC); from June 20, 1941 the name changed to US Army Air Force (USAAF).
Only after the Second World War did the Air Force become independent. The name was then changed to US Air Force (USAF).
