The Douglas C-47 Skytrain

The Douglas C-47 Skytrain was one of the aircraft types used extensively during World War II and not for nothing was it nicknamed 'Skytrain'. The C-47s were deployed to transport troops, cargo and the wounded.

The C-47 was designed by the Douglas Aircraft Company as a customised version of the C-3, which was used for civil aviation. During and after the war many versions of the aircraft were built, all for specific purposes.

The C-47 was used in Operation Market Garden to drop paratroopers and during the Ardennes offensive to provide supplies to the Allied force trapped in Bastogne.
